Pilgrims from all over Europe visit Santiago de Compostela, Spain, where the body of St James was discovered. They have a particular status in that part of Spain, and are frequently greeted by local people. Pilgrims travelling on foot must be prepared to walk long distances between villages, and the terrain can sometimes be very hilly. However, there are many attractive places to stay, and reaching Santiago de Compostela gives a great sense of achievement.
