Leaping the rhetorical gap

Article Abstract:

The Clinton administration's overuse of the word "enlargement" in speeches relating to foreign relations is inappropriate. The word is an attempt at not sounding militaristic, but its diplomatic meaning is lost. The word "engagement" better describes international contact.

Pres Clinton's speech at the signing of a Middle East peace agreement between Yasir Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin was alternately brilliant and jaded in its phrasing. Linguistic analyses of Arafat's and Rabin's speeches are also given.

Article Abstract:

The origins of current political terms such as 'put up or shut up;' 'squandered' ' and 'pander' are analyzed. The Hebrew translation of Hadassah (Mrs. Joe Lieberman) is corrected; it means 'myrtle,' not 'Esther'.
