COVER STORY: Some of New England's best beaches are described, taking various factors like scenery, surfing, water, and bird watching into consideration. They include the Silver Sands State Park in Connecticut for the warmest water, Napatree Point in Rhode Island for best walk, Narragansett Town Beach in Rhode Island for best surfing.

Turkey vultures (TVs), hulking black birds with small, bald, red heads, have migrated to New England. The TVs are scavengers and have migrated to Connecticut due to the large availability of white-tailed deer, which is a favorite TV dinner.
