Pharmaceutical giant shares the wealth: Merck funds research and development in Costa Rica

Costa Rica's National Biodiversity Institute (INBio) signed a contract with Merck & Co. in 1991. INBio will provide Merck with genetic materials from Costa Rican flora and fauna; Merck will provide $1.14 million, royalties, technical assistance and training. INBio is primarily in conservation; bioprospecting funds the programs.

Attack of a giant tusker

Daryl and Sharna Balfour were out in South Africa's Kruger National Park photographing elephants when a large bull suddenly attacked Daryl. He suffered extensive injuries as a result of the attack but he was lucky enough to survive.
