Robert Pinsky was named Poet Laureate of the US in 1997, and he decided to try and make poetry more popular in the nation. He has created the Favorite Poem Project in which he solicits any Americans' favorite poems. Responses have given Pinsky a feel for Americans and poetry.

Andrew Carroll, with the help of poet laureate Joseph Brodsky, organized the American Poetry and Literacy Project. They aim to popularize poetry as a means of improving the US' cultural life by distributing poetry books to hotels and publishing poems in telephone directories.
