Social disorder in Indonesia

Article Abstract:

Indonesia has experienced increasing social and political unrest since 1995, with a series of religious and ethnic riots from Oct 1996 through Feb 1997. Theories as to why the country is experiencing such upheaval include a conspiracy masterminded by a third political party against the two leading parties, widening socio-economic disparities, and increasing numbers of politically frustrated and marginalized people. There is evidence for all three theories, but all reveal the so-called New Order stability of the government is not genuine. Violence may impact the May 1997 election.

Article Abstract:

The Australian government is in the midst of a controversy concerning the role of government in people's decisions about protecting themselves. Road rules such as helmets for cyclists and seat belts for motorists have been credited with saving lives. However, some question if these rules take away individual rights to choose how to protect their own bodies.
