The images represent the human drama side of routine events, happenings or competitions that reflect a combination of determination and despair. Winners include Sebastiao Salgado, Larry Fink, Lynn Johnson, Seamus Murphy, Tim Rice, James Nachtwey, Alex Tehrani, and Scott Hunt. Subject themes cover Chiapas Indian peasants, Detroit's Hair Wars contest, Missoula, MT's Chalice of Rose harpists who comfort the terminally ill, Beirut, Lebanon's Arabian horse races in the midst of Christian-Muslim tensions, life in the shadow of the Limerick, PA nuclear power plant, AIDS hospices in Thailand, African American college students' annual spring `Freaknik' celebration, and living history World War II reenactments in Texas.
