The period in Russia between the fall of communism and the demise of Boris Yeltsin witnessed the rise in fortunes of class of ultra-powerful media executives. Newly ascendant president Vladimir Putin intends to rein in the power of these oligarchs, whose wealth and connections make them formidable contestants.
