Article Abstract:

A devastating ice storm hit Newport, NH, in 1998, bringing down more poles than all the storms since the 1960s combined. The worst in the history of New England, it forced every lineman in the district to go out and work the poles. It left Alan Noyes paralyzed, after he was struck by a snapping birch tree.

Alberta Moody, an 88-year-old resident of Foxchase Retirement Home in New Hampshire, remembers her younger days as she reads her poems from her old notebooks. A volunteer, Fran Lyons, keeps Moody company on Thursdays.
