The greatest veneration

Article Abstract:

Friedrich St. Florian's design for a World War II memorial met intense scrutiny, with critics invoking terms like "fascist" and "nationalistic" to categorize the work. St. Florian was buoyed by support from numerous public institutions and figures, including ex-Senator and war veteran Bob Dole. He discusses the balance in a war memorial between commemorating the sacrifice without glorifying war itself.
