Phenomena of Retraction

Article Abstract:

Many scientific reports continue to be treated as valid research even after they have been retracted. Researchers used the MEDLINE database to identify 235 articles published between 1966 and 1997 that had subsequently been retracted. Most were retracted by some or all of the authors but some were retracted by someone else. Most were retracted because they contained errors or the results could not be duplicated. However, 86 contained evidence of fraudulent research. The 235 retracted articles were cited 2,034 times after the retraction notice was published and many of the authors of the citing articles were not aware of the retraction.
