Old Faithful: Yellowstone at 125: the world's first national park celebrates its past and grapples with its future

In 1872, Yellowstone was established by Pres Ulysses S. Grant as the first National Park, to be preserved for the enjoyment of the American public. Yellowstone and other national parks have had to balance the two goals of national parks, to preserve nature while making it accessible to the public.

Zurich's needle park

The Platzspitz, a city park in Zurich, is the center of the city's drug trade and the main area where addicts congregated. The city government tolerates the drug trade and even supplies free counselling, medical care, condoms, and syringes.

Zurich's Needle Park

Article Abstract:

Zurich established a social service network to care for drug addicts who populate the Platzspitz park. The program has backfired, as numbers of addicts and drug related crimes have increased.
