Beltway exile

Article Abstract:

Incumbent Representative of Orange County, CA, Robert K. Dornan, was defeated by Loretta Sanchez in the 1996 election. Dornan still believes that he won that election and claims that there were 1500 to 3500 votes that were secretly taken. However, after his defeat, he still went to the House floor as a former member. Dornan's presence resulted in a conflict between him and another representative who claimed that Dornan uttered different kinds of offensive words which Dornan strongly denied. As a result, he was barred by 289 members of the House and 111 Republicans. Dornan considers running again in the 1998 elections.

Losing its grip

Article Abstract:

The Republican Party's political hold on Orange County, CA, has declined due to the changing nature of politics, changing demographics and several embarrassing controversies. The single most important cause of this decline was the voter passage of term limits in 1992 which limited the term of congressmen to six-years and that of senators to eight years. Other causes include the passage of a campaign finance law that put a cap on campaign financing and the passage of an open primary system that lessens the chance of ideological domination by a portion of the voter population.

Senate

Article Abstract:

Republican candidates have the advantage over their Democratic counterparts, with nine districts that are sure GOP strongholds or have such leanings compared to eight districts with Democratic leanings. Districts 15, 21 and 27 are toss-ups with Democratic candidates Rusty Areias, Adam Schiff and Betty Karnette running strong against GOP candidates Bruce McPherson, Paula Boland and Phil Hawkins.
