British party conferences and the political rhetoric of the 1990s

Article Abstract:

Britain's labor party conferences serve many purposes, most of them now oriented toward television and projecting an image of central control. Inner party democracy has weakened, especially in the resurgent Labor party, whose conferences now resemble those of the Conservatives. The Labor party has seized a new middle ground in line with other West European social democracies, becoming a catch-all party and actively discarding ideological baggage. The Social Democrats, who supplied many of its ideas, are defunct.

The International Monetary Fund in the 1990s

Article Abstract:

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is faced with three problems as the international economy becomes more integrated in the 1990s. The movement of the former Eastern bloc toward a market economy requires the IMF to ensure progress and coordinate foreign assistance. Developing countries require debt reduction and payment rescheduling. The Group of 7 countries need the IMF's help in coordinating macroeconomic policy to ensure stability of international economic relations.

The party systems of the established liberal democracies in the 1990s: is this a decade of transformation?

Article Abstract:

The Liberal democratic regimes in most European countries and Japan have experienced unprecedented electoral upheavals in the first half of the 1990s mainly due to economic depression and the end of cold war. The changes are evident in the decline in party membership densities, rise of new parties in three-party systems and a clear pattern of voter revolt against governing parties.
