California on the eve

Article Abstract:

America's California was fashioned in the 19th century on the heels of the Gold Rush, bringing statehood in 1850. The state is characterized by its capacity to absorb change and to be resilient. A state population of 20,039,000 was revealed by the July 1970 census, with 77% white, 12% hispanic, 6.9% black and 3.4% Asian. The state now has a population of 34.6 million, with the white population growing just 12.5%, Hispanics making up 31% of the population, Asians accounting for 11.5% and an increase in the black population of 69%. The state's political system has been extensively overhauled in the past 30 years, but politics remains remote.
