Real change in the USA

Article Abstract:

The American elections of 1994 were both exceptional and significant. Rarely is such a decisive political statement sent in an election. In this case, the public at all levels endorsed the Republican notion of state's rights reflected in the Contract with America. The election was also a direct message that the public was not interested in supporting Bill Clinton's stands on issues such as gay rights and health care reform, a signal that New Deal-style federal government is out of vogue with voters.

Campaigning as governing: the 1996 US Presidential elections

Article Abstract:

The minor shifts in political power that resulted from the 1996 Presidential and congressional elections and the low voter turnouts suggest that the US public was not interested in reinforcing the Republican victories of 1994. Pres Clinton's superior campaigning abilities and good economic conditions ensured his reelection, and shifts in congressional power were too minor to suggest any change in voter opinion. Clinton's second term will likely focus on bi-partisan reforms and foreign policy issues.

Varieties of post-cold war American isolationism

Article Abstract:

Isolationism is a term which has been used historically in a derogatory sense, to encompass a range of different views. Liberals who favor defense cuts and non-coercive US international policy have been labelled isolationists, as have conservatives who want reductions in foreign aid. Economic isolationism refers to various protectionist trade strategies. More specific terms than "isolationist" are needed to describe different political and economic policies.
