"Chump change": can government afford the arts?

Article Abstract:

California's budget crisis has led critics of the California Arts Council (CAC) to suggest the abolition of the controversial agency to Governor Pete Wilson. The CAC is under review for possible dissolution. California State Senator Frank Hill and Assemblyman Tom McClintock argue that funds for the CAC should come from private donations and not from the taxpayers. On the other hand, CAC director Joanne Kozberg and other defenders of the agency maintain that it is appropriate for the taxpayers to support the Arts Council since it contributes to California's economy and cultural diversity.

U.S. Senate

Article Abstract:

Democrat Barbara Boxer won re-election to the US Senate by a margin of 53% to Republican Matt Fong's 43%. Boxer had a reputation as a liberal and her stand on issues such as the death penalty, crime, taxes and social spending appealed only to narrow constituencies. However, Boxer was able to wage an aggressive campaign against Fong and succeeded in destroying Fong's image as a moderate. Fong's defeat was attributed to his 'soft' approach during the campaign, and failed to take advantage of Boxer's negative image as a liberal.

The Davis principle

Article Abstract:

Governor Gray Davis lurked on the fringe of government, as assemblyman, controller and lieutenant governor, where he did not have to make difficult decisions or articulate a vision for California. However he must now do all those things. One official contends that Davis's four-bill education package and his defrosting of relations with Mexico, accomplished in 1999, are evidence of his superb political instincts.
