District-by-district analysis: state senate

Article Abstract:

The election prospects of the candidates for the California Senate are presented. The Democratic majority in the 40-seat Senate is expected to dwindle due to district reapportionment and term limits stipulated by Proposition 140. Changes in the Senate's composition have also been affected by the retirement of some incumbents and the decision of incumbents to run for other offices. The reapportionment has caused an imbroglio in the Senate, as some districts will have two senators, while some will not be represented.

The new leaders

Article Abstract:

Colleagues, politicians and former legislative leaders came to witness the John Lowell Burton's rise to power as California State Senate's new president pro tempore. Burton's return to politics is considered phenomenal since he left Congress in disgrace in 1982. His addiction to drugs and alcohol resulted in his losing 75% of the votes during his last year in Congress. After 15 years, he is back to take the highest spot in the California Legislature.
