Environmental regulations and manufacturer's location choices: evidence from the census of manufacturers

Article Abstract:

Strict environmental regulations do not affect the location choices and establishment of new manufacturing plants. The establishment-level data of the Census of Manufacturers was analyzed to evaluate the effects of environmental regulations on new manufacturing plants locations. Pollution-intensive industries spent only 4% of their total investments on pollution preventive equipments that are required by environmental regulations. Variations in local environmental regulations usually affect the branch plants of large firms.

Identifying the free riders: a simple algorithm for determining who will contribute to a public good

Article Abstract:

Nash equilibrium formulas will divide any heterogeneous group of people concerned with the public good into two groups, including the contributors and the free riders. A general algorithm is proposed to extend the Nash equilibrium outcome by specifically predicting exactly which individuals in any given group will fall into each of these two classes. The algorithm identifies for each individual how much public good must be provided by others to drive that individual's contribution to the public good to zero.
