Expert systems: the pros and cons

Article Abstract:

The full benefits of technology can only be achieved when the tasks to be automated are fully understood and the affected organization and staff are properly prepared. Expert or knowledge-based systems can improve productivity by emulating a human expert's knowledge and decision-making skills in a limited area of expertise. Expert systems are not panaceas, however, and management should be aware of these systems' limitations: long project lead time, slow acceptance of the finished product, short supply and cost of system designers, and expensive development software. Domain selection considerations for expert systems include: (1) clear and cognitive understanding of the domain, (2) availability of human experts, (3) task expertise, (4) shortage of experts in the domain, and (5) tasks requiring between several minutes and several hours to perform.
