Financial services investing in biometrics

Article Abstract:

A report says the financial services industry will proceed with its spending on biometric technology. Biometric devices are being used in the financial services sector in four key applications, namely, electronic access control; check, credit card and teller fraud; physical access control; and automated teller machine (ATM) fraud. Biometrics helps raise the accuracy of user identification, thereby cutting losses resulting from unauthorized access and use. The estimated application of biometrics is anticipated to rise from 8,550 devices in 1996 to over 50,000 in 2000 in all industries.

Delayed egress: moving beyond crime prevention

Article Abstract:

The application of delayed egress technology has moved from theft prevention to patient wandering, anti-passback and infant abduction prevention. The system delays the opening of an exit door for several seconds while an alarm sounds. The two main methods of initiating delayed egress are by door movement and by switch initiation. The market for delayed egress is expected to double in the next two years in response to continued boom in construction particularly in retail and restaurant areas.
