From Prague to Baghdad: Lustration systems and their political effects

Article Abstract:

A study assesses the limitation, advantages and problems of lustration systems of several European nations and recommends specific lustration models to suit particular types of countries. It assesses the initial public employment policies pursued by the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) in Iraq between 2003 and 2004 and proposes an alternative model that would be more suitable for the divided society and more compatible with the objectives of the Report on the Transition to Democracy in Iraq.

European Union accession dynamics and democratization in Central and Eastern Europe: Past and future perspectives

Article Abstract:

A study attempts to contextualize the problems associated with accession by examining the political process from the mid-1990s that led to the enlargement of the European Union (EU) in 2004. It explores the question of how much accelerating accession furthered democratic conditionality and whether this in turn promoted democratic consolidation in post-Communist countries.
