Implementing the single banking market in Europe

Article Abstract:

The successful implementation of a single banking market in Europe depends on the effective enforcement of European Community directives on internal and external competition, and the setting of standards involving capitalization, risk exposure, solvency, disclosure, supervision, and money laundering. While most European banks have already implemented these directives and standards, or are about to, other smaller and less efficient banks are forming barriers to protect their interests from competition.

Changes in the structure of urban banking markets in the West

Article Abstract:

Mergers between depository institutions (DIs) have resulted in a decline in the banking industry. In the Twelfth District, for instance, more than two-thirds of the 53 urban banking markets with a significant decline in DIs underwent increased market concentration. This indicates that unabated merger or further market concentration could be detrimental to the banking industry. It also intensifies competition in the industry.

Within two weeks, its average future expected inflation rate had further depreciated by 60 basis points.
