Article Abstract:

It is important to avoid subscribing automatically to preconceived views about Latinos and their increasing influence on Californian politics. Most significantly, care must be taken to avoid seeing Latinos as a monolithic interest group with strong links with the Democratic Party. In fact, the Latino community represents many different interests, and politicians should not deliver a single message to Latinos. It is also vital to be aware of the way in which Latinos are changing California's cultural and political landscape.

Article Abstract:

The dynamics of Latino politics in Southern California have changed in the 1990s from the 1960s when Cesar Chavez was the dominant Latino political leader. Latino politics had been defined by divided rural and urban interests, but an 'ethnically transcendent' model of Latino politics has replaced the nationalistic 'agrarian' model. The contemporary Latino leader does not perceive ethnic identity as a primary political influence and Latino candidates are increasingly winning elections in non-Latino districts of California.
