Managing urban growth with urban growth boundaries: a theoretical analysis

Article Abstract:

Three increasingly complex models were formulated to assess the problem of urban growth management with a congestible public good that needs to be maintained at some constant level. The first model reveals that pricing of public good at marginal cost leads to attainment of an efficient urban growth path. The second model, which deals with management of urban growth problem when the public good is priced at average cost, shows that attainment of an efficiency can be achieved through imposition of an urban growth boundary (UGB) which balances efficiency losses from overpopulation. It also reveals that extension of the planning horizon and the capacity of infrastructure leads to an increase in a population that is contained within optimal UGB.

Uncertainty in location: location theory under uncertainty without and with taxes: a generalization

Article Abstract:

A linear space location model is developed to establish whether the exclusion theorem can be used to explain firm location uncertainty for numerous sources, including production uncertainty, base price uncertainty, and transport rate uncertainty. Results indicate that there are two significant elements which enable the intermediate location to be optimal: the firm's perspective towards risk and the type of uncertainty.
