More equal but less mobile? Education financing and intergenerational mobility in Italy and in the US

Article Abstract:

A study of centralized and egalitarian tertiary school systems in Italy and the US has been conducted in order to compare their impact on intergenerational mobility. The results indicate that Italy, compared to the US, exhibits less inequality but also less upward mobility in terms of educational attainment and occupations. It is concluded that, for societies where family background is essential for success, a centralized and egalitarian educational system does not always benefit poor children.
