Propositions

Article Abstract:

A loophole in the numbering sequence for propositions in California allows legislators to place their most favoured proposals at the top of the ballot. This is why the Indian gaming initiative, which permits Indian tribes to offer gambling, became Proposition 1A. Other propositions cover a wide range of issues. Proposition 12 covers the use of park bonds to purchase and maintain recreational, cultural and natural areas, while Proposition 13 relates to the Safe Drinking Water, Clean Water, Watershed Protection Act.

November 1998 ballot propositions

Article Abstract:

Voters in California will consider several ballot initiatives come November 1998. The propositions will be numbered from one to 10 and will repeat the cycle every 10 years based on an amendment to a previous law requiring the consecutive numbering of ballot propositions. The proposals cover varied issues such as the freezing of tax valuations for properties needing environmental repair or replacement and the prohibition of using traps and poisons in animal hunting. The propositions have met the approval and opposition of several state organizations and other public sectors.
