On Michael Oakeshott

Article Abstract:

Self-styled civil theorist Michael Oakeshott has written on both the liberal and conservative sides of political theory, but should be classified as neither. Oakeshott's insight on human experience, his perspective of politics as a practical activity and the consistency of his arguments reveal him as a champion of civil association, a theory of the state's role. While his relation of theory to conduct reaches some fallacious conclusions, his other work establishes him as an inspired independent.
