On the cultural transmission of preferences for social status

Article Abstract:

An examination of the role of cultural transmission of preferences within the socio-economic context of consumption showed that there is little evidence to support the theory, that there is a degenerate distribution of the population that supports preferential and non-preferential modes of consumption. This is seen in the composition of the population, which is dynamically unstable, that at times is even shown to provide a proportionate mix of both preferential and non-preferential consumption behavior.
