Populism into the twenty-first century

Article Abstract:

Popular political movements and parties will continue to serve an important role in the 21st century, particularly in countries in which a popular party can serve as opposition to a conservative party that represents the interests of economic elites. Populism is most likely in nations with strong divisions in modernization, leadership by elites that lack legitimacy and educated workers unable to find high-wage jobs. Latin America has experienced many forms of populism, and Eastern European countries may be candidates for populism movements.

Letter from Argentina

Article Abstract:

Argentina is experiencing increasing economic and political stability. The antagonism between economic groups has contributed to civil and civil-military conflicts in the past, and the Peronistas have prevented stabilization. The Peronista movement appears to be Argentina's version of Christian democracy. Argentina should develop a more suitable political system if it becomes a First World country.
