Public policy and anthropometric outcomes in the Cote d'Ivoire

Article Abstract:

The effect of public policies on child height, child weight for height and adult body mass index are examined using data from the third round of the Cote d'Ivoire Living Standards Survey (CILSS) conducted by the Direction de la Statistique and the Living Standards Unit at the World Bank. An analysis of the determinants of individual anthropometric outcomes using the CILSS shows that public policy has a significant effect on the health of Ivory Coast inhabitants, particularly the children.

Does Head Start help hispanic children?

Article Abstract:

Head Start, a government sponsored preschool program, was evaluated to see its effects on US hispanic children by comparing children who attended the program and those who did not. The program, which gives poor children free access to preschool, played a significant role in educating hispanic children, mostly immigrants, and in decreasing the gap between advantaged and poor children by at least one quarter in test scores.

The political economy of public employment programs

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the political economy of active labor market programs (ALMPs). The policy choice was to determine the fraction of the unemployed to place in an active program. The assumption was that viable policies have to please the employed majority. Results indicate that the welfare consequences depend on the nature of ALMPs and the political weight attributed to firm interests.
