Regional income dynamics

Article Abstract:

Regional income dynamics was examined by identifying the impact of shocks to per capita personal income growth in one region on per capita income growth in other areas. For the study, yearly data covering the period 1929 to 1990 for the eight regions of the Bureau of Economic Analysis were used. Impulse response functions and variance decompositions from an estimated structural vector autoregression were applied. Results showed that there are significant spillovers among regions that are distant from the region where the shocks came from. In addition, it is discovered that the shocks have a tendency to produce highly persistent effects. This finding suggest that collective action may improve the effectiveness of state and local government initiatives regarding infrastructure and other aspects of growth and development.

Understanding late-twentieth-century capitalism: reassessing the globalization theme

Article Abstract:

Observers that state that capitalism is undergoing a fundamental change in the late 20th century overstate the degree to which globalization is a change in the international economic climate. Information technology and new production methods have resulted in changes in the operation of capitalism, but thinking globally is not a new phenomena for business. It is more appropriate to focus on economic changes that shift from state to private control than it is to focus on shifts from nationalism to internationalism.
