Secretary of state

Article Abstract:

Bill Jones and Michela Alioto were the winners in the California primaries for the office of the Secretary of State. Election results marked a higher-than-average turnout for the Democratic Party with Jones registering 2,382,915 votes, a 500,000-vote lead over that of Republican nominee Alioto. Alioto's bid was helped by the fact that she is the granddaughter of the late San Francisco Mayor Joe Alioto. She is already accusing Jones of being overly zealous in his campaign against voter fraud to diminish his popularity among voters before the Nov 1998 elections.

Secretary of State

Article Abstract:

Republican Bill Jones was re-elected as California's Secretary of State by garnering 47% of votes cast versus the 46% received by Democrat Michela Alioto. The number of votes for Alioto was surprising considering that she has not held an elected office. Jones's narrow victory was due to his low profile and his name did not resonate among many voters during the campaign. Jone's narrow victory is an indication that incumbent politicians should never take for granted their re-election campaigns despite their achievements during their terms in office.
