Seeking balance between owls and people

Article Abstract:

California business and industry groups charge that the state's environmentallaws hamper their progress and operations. The groups maintain that they do notintend to change the essence of the laws but only to modify them so that they become less stringent. The business and industry sectors have been able to attain some legislative changes favorable to them while recent surveys showed that they do not prioritize environmental issues. Meanwhile, the failure of theforestry reform law undermined the collaborative efforts between industry and environmental groups and caused disenchantment in the two groups.

The greening of corporate California

Article Abstract:

California companies are urged to increase their efforts toward environment-friendly manufacturing practices and products. This growing environmental awareness was largely induced by the threat of consumer boycotts. Consumer boycotts can adversely affect the marketing and public image of companies such as Mitsubishi Corp, a company known for its environmentally destructive activities. Business consultants strongly recommend ecologically balanced business practices as the best approach to a successful business enterprise.

The greenhouse effect: hot skies over California ... and how to cool them off

Article Abstract:

California is developing a climate-change policy to mitigate the greenhouse effect. Part of California's comprehensive climate policy is forest management. California's forest management stresses urban forestry with the aim of planting 20 million trees by the year 2000. The tree-planting project has resulted in many social and environmental gains for California. The state's response to the challenge of climate change might benefit other countries with the same Mediterranean climates.
