Supporting players: Sacramento lawmakers

Article Abstract:

Politicians in California have over recent years made significant efforts to meet the needs of the film industry. Senate President pro Tempore John Burton's SB 262 bill, which permits civil actions against photographers who trespass on private property to obtain photographs, was signed into law by Governor Pete Wilson in late 1998, while AB 776 standardized the number of absences permitted for child actors, who previously were liable to be penalized for failing to attend school. Assemblywoman Sheila Kuehl has recently introduced AB 884, which takes tough action against fraudulent talent managers.

Out of the sandbox: Sacramento city politics may go big-time

Article Abstract:

Sacramento, CA, has a part-time city council that works 25 hours per week, earns $20 per meeting and could change from the current council/city manager form of government to a full-time mayor/council form of government. This change would mandate the re-wording of the Sacramento city charter of 1923. Proponents of the mayor/council form of government believe elections every four years would prevent political corruption and cronyism. Proponents of the council/city manager form of government believe the ability of the council to fire the city manager prevents corruption.
