The Japanese election of 25 June 2000

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the 2000 elections in Japan, focusing on the controversial campaign of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) candidate Yoshiro Mori, who had been chosen by the late Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi as his successor. The election results for the parties are evaluated, using them as an estimate of who may be chosen as the next prime minister; the author believes that reform in party politics and a change in leadership and policy is necessary for a political and economic recovery.

Is there life after Kohl? The CDU crisis and the future of party democracy in Germany

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the role of the Christian Democratic Union as a party of opposition in German politics since its defeat in elections in 1998; the defeat of Helmut Kohl was the first time in the post-war era that a chancellor was voted out of office. Crises leading to the election are addressed, include Kohl's acceptance of illicit funds and the length of his incumbency, which may have encouraged a lack of transparency and illegal practices.
