The democratic dimension of European integration

Article Abstract:

There are two tendencies in the current integration of Europe, somewhat at odds with one another. The first is a technocratic concern to reduce as much as practicable the powers of individual states for the sake of maximum integration and efficiency. The second is concerned to preserve the sovereignty of those states, for the sake of a democratically organized Community. As it is presently constituted, the European Community does not qualify as a democratic association of equals, but it is moving ever closer to that goal.

Future prospects for Europe

Article Abstract:

The European Community (EC) suffers from problems relating to ratification of the Maastricht Treaty that manifest themselves in three forms. Since 1993 the EC has found itself in an economic and social crisis, a political crisis and an institutional crisis. These problems serve as a precursor of profound structural changes that the EC will face in the future. The institutional and economic framework of the organization must be strengthened and made more flexible to accommodate these changes.

Reflections on the Maastricht Treaty

Article Abstract:

The European Council approved the Treaty on European Union, or Maastricht Treaty, on Dec 9-10, 1992. Creating the political and economic unity sections of the treaty followed different courses, as the conference groups chartered to draft them worked apart. Many early concepts were shed for the sake of expedience, but the final draft allows for common defense and economic union. The treaty paves the way for the inevitable combination of European states.
