The new right conception of citizenship and the citizen's character

Article Abstract:

The concept of citizenship relates the general claims of justice with a person's specific entitlements and obligations. There are different conceptions of citizenship as the rights and duties of a citizen are different according to different theories of justice. The social democratic conception of citizenship discusses the development of capitalist relations under the modern nation state. The New Right conception has an altogether different view of justice and its connection with social processes. The New Right conception criticizes the social democrat conception of citizenship.

Broadcasting, public opinion and participative government

Article Abstract:

Television coverage of political news and the influence that it has on the political process poses challenges for public political participation. Television news in the UK does not provide the depth that broadsheet newspapers can provide, and story selection favors image-based stories over analytical stories. The deregulation of television broadcasting in the UK has made regulation more difficult, and government influence on news content is limited to European Union initiatives and national regulation of satellite equipment and UK advertisers.

'Marshalling-ing' social and political citizenship: Towards a unified conception of citizenship

Article Abstract:

The three reasons for re-appraising and re-examining T.H. Marshall's classic 'Citizenship and Social Class' are discussed. Marshall outlines a unified conception of citizenship where the different facets of citizenship interact with one another and social citizenship rights based around equality of status are central for a fully functioning conception of citizenship.
