The pendulum swings: the British election of 1997

Article Abstract:

The 1997 national election in the United Kingdom proves that when a government appears to lack unity and direction, it will suffer heavily for it at the polls. The election was more a Conservative fiasco than a Labor conquest, although Labor won 64% of the parliamentary seats and sharply increased its share of the vote over past elections. The number of Conservative seats dropped to 165, the lowest level since 1906. The number of women elected to Parliament doubled to 120. The 1997 election teaches that a party's perceived ability to govern is paramount in determining its electoral success.

A step toward one-party predominance: Japan's general election of 20 October 1996

Article Abstract:

The Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) return to power in Japan's general election on October 20, 1996, signals an end to the period of reform following the political scandals of the early 1990s. The one-party system, with the LDP in control, predominates in Japan because the country's bureaucracy prefers to deal with a single party, instead of a coalition. LDP also benefits from local support for single, strong leaders and from disenchantment with reform. The 1993-1996 reform period was similar to the reform period in Japan from 1974-1976.
