What's globalization got to do with it? Economic interdependence and the future of European welfare states

Article Abstract:

A debate about the future of the European welfare state in relation to globalization, European integration and the European social model is presented. It is suggest that it is neo-liberalism rather than social democracy that should be seen as the burden on competitiveness in an era of heightened competition amongst nations, and US economy is presented as the model to be emulated, combining good economic performance with near full employment.

Public service varies significantly between France and the UK because each nation constructs citizenship differently. France's concept of public service accepts permitting public sector monopolies to experience competition, while the UK model is primarily concerned with setting standards, promoting public participation, and implementing local democracy.

A comparative analysis of the anti-terrorist legislation introduced in Britain, France and Germany is described. After the September 11 attack, countries around the world started to introduce anti-terrorism laws, to safeguard them against any other similar event.
