A formula for shoes, plywood - and primary care in Arkansas

Article Abstract:

Munro & Co, a shoe manufacturer based in Hot Springs, AR, found health insurance costs rising too rapidly. The company joined with Weyerhaeuser Co to provide self-insured health care for both companies' employees. Starting in 1988, networks of primary care physicians serve as gatekeepers to refer patients to hospitals and specialists, at a set fee schedule. Employees have the option of staying with the traditional plan or joining the network, and 75% to 80% of employees have joined the managed care network.

Dynamic duo: the growth of managed care is dramatically changing the way doctors and nurses work together

Article Abstract:

Doctors and hospital administrators are joining to set standards and protocols to bring greater efficiency to treatment of patients such as cardiac emergencies in hospitals under managed care. For example, the heart center at Mercy Hospital, near Minneapolis, MN, every step of the treatment of heart patients was analyzed. As a result, average cost of treatment was cut about 50% and patients went home sooner. Similar programs at other hospitals and health maintenance organizations are described.

To buy or not to buy, that is the question

Article Abstract:

Managed care companies are weighing the pros and cons of acquiring hospitals. AvMed-Santa Fe and FHP International are among the companies that have decided to avoid such acquisitions, feeling they are able to provide adequate care without actually acquiring the asset. Others tout the flexibility that Kaiser and Friendly Hills have been able to achieve through a mix of health alliances.
