A more effective approach to in-hospital defibrillation

Article Abstract:

In-hospital survival rates for heart attack victims may improve if all nurses are trained and authorized to use defibrillators. Early defibrillation of out-of-hospital heart attack victims has increased their survival rate. To improve hospital survival rates, cardiovascular nurses should train floor nurses in defibrillation. Blind defibrillation of a pulseless patient or of a patient with no organized heart rate may be preferable to not shocking at all. In-hospital heart attack survival rates remain around 15%.

Developing and revising the American heart Association guidelines for advanced cardiac life support

Article Abstract:

Cardiovascular nurses may need to become more involved in revising the guidelines for Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). The guidelines and educational support materials are revised every seven years by medical and nursing organizations in the U.S. and other countries. The guidelines reflect the latest in cardiovascular and drug research, and are then translated into educational materials for the ACLS certification tests. ACLS guidelines also influence international resuscitation guidelines.
