A virtual playground for sick kids

Article Abstract:

Filmmaker Steven Spielberg, chmn of the Starbright Foundation, has helped create the Starbright World virtual reality communications program. The program uses virtual reality animation and videoconferencing over broadband networks to enable seriously ill children to communicate with each other. Technology for Starbright was supplied by Intel, Sprint, UB Networks and Worlds Inc.

Valley Health Systems clinics, located in rural areas in southern West Virginia, are as up to date in technology as some urban medical facilities. The clinics have created a Web-based network that uses easy-to-use software. Potenial security problems are prevented by the use of special hardware and software systems that make data more secure from hackers.

The Health Information Network Connection or THINC is a private intranet of several New York, NY, hospitals and insurance companies. Physicians can access multiple information systems with fingerprint identification as their single log-on. The system is considered easy to use and less expensive because it is a privately owned operation.
