A winning market strategy for HMOs

Article Abstract:

PacifiCare Health Systems, in California, has developed certain strategies that have helped them become a profitable, efficient, customer-oriented health maintenance organization. Physicians within this network operate in close-knit groups whose communication is more efficient so that they can best manage the health of their patients. In addition, optional guidelines are available to physicians so that they can managed different diseases in an effective way.

He notes that the Minneapolis, MN, organization emphasizes, in addition to primary care, partnerships with community and public-health agencies. Fairview also owns a preferred-provider organization and is creating a health maintenance organization.

Benchmarking data for establishing standards at health care organizations are presented. Health care organizations in a variety of markets were studied; the market had different levels of penetration by managed care groups. Included are results on financial performance; cost of patient care, both inpatient and outpatient; and consumer satisfaction.
