Backcountry baby care

Article Abstract:

St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck, ND, has received a NOVA Award for its innovative plan to provide pregnant women on Standing Rock Indian Reservation with obstetrical care and prenatal counseling. About half of the women had insufficient prenatal services or transportation problems that made them unable to make it to prenatal care appointments. As a result of the program, which was created in cooperation with tribal and community leaders, a local clinic, and Indian Health Service, prenatal visits increased markedly.

Starting over, with H.O.P.E

Article Abstract:

Holmes Regional Medical Center of Melbourne, FL, received a NOVA Award for its Health, Outreach, Prevention and Education (HOPE) program to treat the medically indigent. About 10% of the population of Brevard County, FL, had insufficient medical care, largely as a result of government cutbacks of defense and space programs that were located there. Through the program, Holmes and two sister hospitals successfully boosted the county's child immunization rate, dental care, outreach programs, and overall clinic visits.

The program, which was carried out in conjunction with the New Haven Major's Task Force on AIDS, supports a skilled nursing facility for 30 patients, a meals program, and outreach programs for risk groups, and services through other community agencies. The number of patient days has declined 20% since 1994, even though the number of AIDS cases has been rising.
