Bigger sales forces for smaller companies

Article Abstract:

Alza Corp. will triple the size of its sales force to 360 and venture into marketing its own products. The pharmaceutical company that specializes in the development of drug-delivery systems, will concentrate on the promotion and sale of its incontinence drug, Ditropan XL, which is expected to obtain FDA approval before the end of 1998. Dura Pharmaceuticals is likewise expanding its sales force to 450 representatives from 355 detail persons. Dura, which specializes in bronchopulmonary products, has recently obtained exclusive marketing rights for the single-source tuberculosis drug, Myambutol, from American Home Products Corp. for $33.5 million.

After Redux? Here's how Meridia was introduced into a "tainted" market

Article Abstract:

Knoll Pharmaceutical had engaged in significant preparation before it released its new diet medication Meridia into the market without significantly altering its previous marketing strategy. Usually, companies invest a minimum of two years in collaboration with an advertising agency before it introduces a new product. At the same time, the market has never considered prescription anti-obesity medication that highly in the first place. Knoll Pharmaceutical marketing director Joe Loftus indicated that the company aimed to make Meridia part of a patient's planned weight control program supervised by a physician.
