CEOs help physicians cope with growing professional stress

Article Abstract:

Hospital chief executive officers should help physicians cope with stress arising from changes in professional medicine and health care such as managed care, reform, and third-party control. Ways to help include developing one-on-one relationships to provide support, focusing on key, forward looking physicians, and providing information about seminars and events that deal with physician stress. Limitations to administrator support of physicians include physicians desires for independence and privacy and the possibility of charges of collaboration.

Human resources strategic planning: the time is now

Article Abstract:

Most hospitals are neglecting a comprehensive human resources strategy that will meet the future needs of their institution. Most strategies are limited to handling daily crises, and leave no room for plans that will affect the future of the institution. Some of the work force challenges affecting hospitals in the future include the increasing gap between the skills new applicants have and those required by the hospital. Another challenge is the increasing shortages of hospital workers to fill both non-clinical and clinical jobs.

Involving physicians in the CEO search leads to partnership

Article Abstract:

Hospital physicians should be directly involved in the CEO search process to ensure that the medical staff has input. While the medical staff should not have the power to control CEO selection, which should be the governing board's domain, it is vitally important that the medical staff is involved in the leadership of the institution. The main purpose of medical staff involvement would be to judge whether a particular candidate's 'fit' is right for the hospital, and not to evaluate their professional competency.
