Care of the elective intracoronary stent patient

Article Abstract:

Nurses caring for patients undergoing the intracoronary stent procedure as an alternative to coronary angioplasty should educate themselves on the patient's needs both before and after the surgery. Eligibility for the procedure includes de novo lesions within a coronary artery measuring 3.0 to 4.0 millimeters and an ability to tolerate anticoagulation. Patients with extreme hypertension or obesity are not eligible. The nurse should inform the patient of all aspects of intracoronary stent surgery and be assured that the patient is making an informed choice in undergoing the procedure.

Special issues in critical care gerontology

Article Abstract:

Critical care nurses are going to manage a larger proportion of older patients in the future. Continuing education, reading materials, and professional seminars provide nurses with such expertise. Age-related aspects include the use of constraints in delirious patients, the prevention of sleep deprivation and sensory overload, decisions about the use of resuscitation, and discharge planning for continued care after hospitalization.
