Clearing cervical spine injuries: a discussion of the process and the problems

Article Abstract:

The cervical spine is immobilized following injury to prevent spinal cord damage until the extent of injury can be fully assessed. However, delayed removal of cervical spine precautions can lead to unnecessary skin injury and patient discomfort. X-rays, CT imaging, and other diagnostic techniques reveal bony fractures and ligament injuries, both of which can threaten the spinal cord. A multidisciplinary team can determine the best use of spinal precautions to protect patients while minimizing excessive immobilization.

Crush injuries: a case of entrapment

Article Abstract:

Crush injuries can cause extensive initial damage and multiple life-threatening complications during recovery. When the body is crushed, blood loss, fluid shifts, coagulopathies, hypovolemia, and hypotension can ensue. Many victims remain entrapped for hours before rescue and treatment. Sustained hypotension can lead to renal failure and widespread tissue ischemia. Care includes surgery, fluid resuscitation, pain control, and infection prevention and treatment.
