Clinical benchmarking: implications for perinatal nursing

Article Abstract:

Benchmarking can assist hospital managers improve clinical care by adopting processes used by the most effective health care facilities. Benchmarking is a system of scorekeeping in which participants compare their performance with that of the best performers in the industry. Many process and outcome measures are available for care parameters related to perinatal nursing, allowing managers to rank their own facility's outcomes using data from the Department of Health and Human Services, American Academy of Pediatrics, and other sources.

The Joint Commission's ORYX initiative: implications for perinatal nursing and care

Article Abstract:

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations ORYX initiative is a program to include comparative measures and outcome assessments in the review of hospitals. Part of the Commission's Agenda for Change, ORYX directs hospitals to select a measurement system and collect data on various clinical, process, and outcome indicators to quantify aspects of patient care. Perinatal nurses should be aware of the obstetric and neonatal measures tracked by their hospital, and the process of collecting the critical data.

Developing a service line approach to quality improvement

Article Abstract:

Analysis of service lines can be used in health care quality assessment programs. Women and Infants Hospital of Providence, RI, implemented such a program to track aspects of care delivery for similar patients receiving similar treatment. A service line approach can integrate quality assurance functions, reduce duplication of tasks, and improve communications between caregivers and other hospital staff.
